Maine has one of the highest percentages of people over 64 years old in the country. In fact, with a median age of 41 years, we are the "grayest" state in the nation ( Census.gov).
Seniors in Maine face many challenges. Maine seniors often live on fixed incomes. In Maine’s many rural communities, seniors may have trouble traveling to get the health services they need. Most chronic diseases rise in incidence as you get older. Depression, Alzheimer’s, and Suicide are highest among elders. (Healthy Maine 2010: Opportunities for All, Maine CDC)
