Although men and women in Maine face many of the same health issues, health problems for women are often different. Symptoms for some diseases, such as heart attacks, are different for women than they are for men. Some conditions are more common in women, such as osteoporosis, breast cancer or depression. Other conditions, like pregnancy and menopause, only effect women.
Facts:
On average, Maine women earn 75 cents for every dollar earned by men in our state. However, their out-of-pocket expenses for health services are about 68% more than what is paid by men of the same age. (From Healthy Maine 2010: Opportunities for All, Maine CDC)
