Men’s Health in Maine

As a group, men face a number of unique health problems. Men tend to drink, smoke, and engage in risk-taking behaviors more than women do. They also don't seek medical care as often as women. In Maine, men have higher rates of death due to:

Heart disease

Stroke

Lung cancer

Diabetes

Suicide

(From Healthy Maine 2010: Opportunities for All, Maine CDC)

There are also health conditions that only affect men, such as prostate cancer and low testosterone.

Many of the major health risks that men face - like colon cancer or heart disease - can be prevented and treated with early diagnosis. Screening tests can find diseases early, when they are easier to treat. It’s important to have regular checkups and screenings. (Adapted from MedlinePlus, Men's Health )
