Each year, about 980 women in Maine are diagnosed with breast cancer, and 190 women die from the disease (Maine CDC).
But it doesn't have to be this way. Experts estimate that 20-39% of these deaths could be avoided if women over the age of 50 received screening services. Getting a regular mammogram is one of the most important things a woman can do for her health. Breast cancer is the fifth leading cause of death among women, and mammograms are the best tools for catching breast cancer early. Early detection can be lifesaving, and may allow for more treatment options.
If you or someone you love has breast cancer, there are many resources that can help you learn more, and there are places that you can get help and support. You can get started with the resources on this page.
The Maine Health Forum greatly appreciates the support of the Maine Cancer Foundation, the Martha B. Webber Breast Care Center, and the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition, who provided information about breast cancer and services available in Maine.
